FAQS
What, when and where is State camp?
Sensational 2012 is SA’s centenary State camp to be held from Saturday 7 to Tuesday 10 July 2012 at Douglas Scrub.
Who can go? All Guides and Leaders can attend Sensational 2012. There is a three-night camp for older more experienced Guides and a one night camp (under canvas) for younger or less experienced Guides.
Are there age restrictions for the two camps? It has been suggested that girls aged 5-9yrs attend the overnight camp and older more experienced girls attend the 3-night camp. However, you might have an experienced camper who is only 8 years old who has camped under canvas as a Guide for more than the prerequisite days (3 nights, with 2 consecutive) and who you believe would be able to manage the 3-night camp. So yes, younger girls with the prerequisite experience and a Leader’s recommendation will be able to attend the longer camp.
Can a younger experienced Guide attend the 3-night camp? Yes, see above.
Will girls be able to attend camp without a Leader’s recommendation? No, application forms that are received without a Leader’s recommendation will be returned to the Unit Leader.
How much will it cost? Guides attending the three-night camp $450, Leaders attending the three-night camp $240 and younger Guides and their Leaders attending the overnight camp $130.
Why does the 2012 State Camp cost so much? All South Australian State events incur state levies/fees (including a GGSA administration fee, Lady Swift Fund levy, strategic levy, and allowances for contingency). The cost of the beanie and polar vest are included for the 3-night camp and a beanie for the overnight camp, as well as badges for many of the activities. The planned activities cost money, for example bringing in qualified staff to run the zumba, fencing, archery and climbing wall. There is a youth band for the Guides Own, and we need to hire a PA system for the camp. Of course there are food and accommodation costs.
I think it is too expensive and I won’t even be offering it to our girls. We think this is a real shame. The costs for State Camp were advertised with sufficient time for Units and/or Support Groups to incorporate fundraising into the process. Organising sausage sizzles, collecting cans and bottles, selling chocolates or lamingtons are all excellent ideas and of course being seen out in public is also brilliant publicity. For other fundraising ideas, check out fundraising in Adelaide on the internet.
Leaders should not assume their girls can’t afford the money. It is not up to Leaders to make that decision for parents and their daughters.
When is the overnight camp for the younger Guides? Sunday 8 - Monday 9 July 2012. It is also at Douglas Scrub.
Is the overnight camp for younger Guides under canvas? Yes. There is no indoor camping at Sensational 2012. It will all be outdoors.
Is the overnight camp just a sleepover? No the overnight camp runs for 28 hours. Many of the activities planned for the 3-night camp will be on offer to the Guides attending the overnight camp as well as specific activities designed for the younger age Guides.
Is there an opportunity for Guides who aren’t going to camp to visit? No, a visiting Day has not been planned for this State Camp.
When will the registration form be available? They are out now and can be downloaded and printed from the GGSA website. Forms and the deposit will be due by 2 March 2012. The full cost will need to be paid by 18 May 2012.
Are there prerequisites for State Camp? Will Guides need to have slept a specific number of nights under canvas? Yes, Guides attending the three night camp will need to have slept three nights under canvas, with a minimum of two consecutive nights and they will need their Leader’s recommendation to attend camp.
Can 14-18yrs olds go to Sensational 2012 and will there be a separate program for them? Yes and yes. Although there will be some overlap, separate activities are being planned.
Will there be separate activities for the overnight camp for younger girls? Yes, although there will be some overlap, separate activities are being planned.
What activities are planned for Sensational 2012? There are many exciting activities planned, including a Patrol Masterchef competition, Girl Guides have Talent, patrol challenges, hiking, zumba, archery, fencing, rock wall, geocaching, bike bungle, campfire, opening and closing ceremonies. See the flyer on the GGSA website for more details.
We are really excited, what can we do? Start enthusing your girls, start planning, start fundraising, encourage all of the girls in your unit to get their three nights under canvas, start thinking about what role you’d like at camp and who you’d like to camp with. See the advertisements for roles in camp, volunteer and take on a role.
The Guides are really excited, what can they do? They can start fundraising, get enough nights under canvas, and join in the planning.
Do we have any input who we camp with? Yes, the Leader application form allows Leaders to nominate which Units or Leaders they would prefer to camp with. To the best of our ability, these will be taken into account when planning subcamps.
Do I have a say in what role I take on at camp? Yes the Leader application form allows you to select your preferences.
State Camp is scheduled for July, what happens if it rains? Unfortunately, we cannot prevent rain, camp will carry on regardless of rain. However there will be contingency plans for extreme weather. Wet weather gear will be included on the kit list.
Is there a Kit List and when do we get it? Yes there will be a Kit List. This will be provided in early 2012.
We aren’t a metropolitan Unit, do we need to bring everything with us? We don’t have enough tents for our girls, what can you do for us? Equipment for use within the subcamp will be decided in discussion with Leaders within that subcamp (e.g. who brings what). There will be opportunities for metro Units to lend out tents or other equipment as needed.
Will there be a gateway competition? Yes, gateways are a traditional aspect of our State camps and there will be gateways for the subcamps.
I don’t have an outdoor qualification, can I still come to camp? Yes, Leaders without outdoor qualifications are able to attend State Camp. We will ensure there are enough qualified Leaders in each subcamp.
Is there central catering? No, each subcamp will be responsible for their own menu, shopping and cooking.
Will we be given money to fill gas bottles and buy stuff for our first aid kits? Filling gas bottles and replenishing first aid kits will come out of the subcamp budgets.
There will be more information out soon. Keep watching the GGSA website for additional updates! If you have any questions please send them to statecamp@girlguidessa.org.au
