Message from the State Commissioner
Welcome to 2012, the 100th Year of Girl Guiding in South Australia. What an achievement for an all girl association!
Girls all over the State will be having a great deal of fun learning life skills, environmental education, leadership and citizenship through small group activities mostly in the outdoors. Our wonderful volunteer adult Leader role models enable the girls and young women in Girl Guiding to become confident, self-respecting, responsible community members.
Our Girl Guide Program is centred on the girls and young women in the Units, Districts and Regions within the State. The girls decide on the activities they wish to do and this is facilitated by the Leaders. Activities could be anything from making biscuits for the veterans on ANZAC Day for breakfast, to attending a Unit water activities camp at GTS Dolphin campsite on the Port River, or to appearing on stage for Carry On Guides theatre review, or to attending a full centenary State camp to be held this year at Douglas Scrub Campsite in Blewitt Springs.
As an organisation we are passionate about assisting girls and young women to become the best they can be. Did you know that Grant Thornton International published a study in 2011on the status of women in leadership at top private companies worldwide that showed the percentage of women in leadership positions in 2010 was 24% and in 2011 was 20%? We believe that women have the same ability to lead as men and with the right mentorship, training and work-life balance can reverse this trend.
As a parent you want your daughter to achieve her goals. You want your daughter to be the best she can be. Well so do we and we can assist her to do that in a safe, caring all girl environment away from the conventions of boy-girl relationships and help her meet any challenges along the way.
As a girl or young woman you want to have fun, meet new friends, join a group with 10 Million members worldwide, speak out and take action on issues you see as important locally or globally, play games and enjoy the outdoors. We can help you do that whether as part of a weekly Unit, a social media group, a special interest Unit or a holiday camp.
As a previous member of Girl Guides this is the year to reconnect with us. You remember how much fun it was camping, doing craft, cooking, running activities and watching the girls faces light up, watching them use their leadership skills you had taught them for the first time completely unconscious of what they were doing. You remember! Our girls need your help to be the best they can be. We need your help to help them create the world we would like them to live in. As an alumni member you can help as much as you are able to whether as training to be an adult Leader of Youth or Adults, or a bookkeeper for a Unit, or a social media guru, or sponsoring a girl to attend meetings and camps or a donation to the Association... The list is endless. Reconnect with us and we will be grateful for your assistance as we all Step Up for Guiding to a new and modern world.
Let’s make this Centenary Year 2012 the best it can be!
Dr Michelle Stone
State Commissioner
